Connectivity features as part of The shinkansen Collection: 1989 – 2004, archiving the unique artistic legacy of shinkansen, a collaborative unit renowned for its innovative and pioneering work in sound and movement research.
The development of The shinkansen Collection marks the end of an era which spans fifteen years in the performing arts from 1989 – 2004. shinkansen developed a unique niche within the British and International arts sector through facilitating connectivity between dance, performance, music, video and digital technologies. The shinkansen Collection highlights within its layers, the use of network culture in independent production and the influence of popular and digital culture on performing arts in the 90’s. As a body of work it reveals a focus on group collaboration processes, interdisciplinary and intercultural practice and the evolution of virtual/physical interfaces for live performance.
The shinkansen Collection has four elements:
Connectivity archive of shinkansen projects, events and people

This online database contains descriptions and images, taken from original publicity materials, on over 110+ projects and 375 events and a network resource for shinkansen participants to contribute their own documentation and reconnect
Projects which have media documentation are marked by has media in the Connectivity database and accessible through the British Library (See below).
shinkansen media collection in the British Library Sound Archive
This permanent physical collection of the 750+ shinkansen recordings contains over 1000 hours of video and audio. Viewing is free of charge by appointment with the British Library. Items are listed in their online catalogue.
Connectivity portal of different shinkansen web sites
This portal hosts the two archive sites, Connectivity and British Library and a further 6 web sites: the history sites - shinkansen, Future Physical, Cellbytes, The Weave and the still active and current sites, Creative User and bodydataspace
